Can thyroid problems cause baldness?

Male hair loss causes vary a great deal; a large amount of your scalp hair may come off after a major surgery or as a result of some health condition. Or you may start losing hair because of hormonal imbalance, as in androgenic alopecia, also known as male pattern baldness. Thyroid problems can also trigger a rapid hair loss – so much so that your hairdresser may ‘diagnose’ your thyroid condition before your GP does.

What is thyroid-related hair loss?
Thyroid-related baldness occurs because of hormonal factors. The main task of the thyroid gland is to produce the thyroid hormone for regulating metabolism in your body. But when the production of the hormone is either more than normal (hyperthyroidism) or less than normal (hypothyroidism), you may suffer from rapid hair loss. In a way, quick and sudden loss of hair may well be a symptom of thyroid problems.

I find loose hairs on my pillow and in the sink basin every morning. Can it be a sign of danger?
No. It is estimated that about 100-150 strands of hair fall off everyday on their own. This type of hair fall is natural and it occurs mainly because of the fact that each hair strand has a specific life span after which it is bound to come off from the follicles. The life span of a single hair strand is usually 4-5 years.

How can I differentiate between thyroid-related baldness and male pattern baldness?
To find the exact hair loss causes can be difficult, particularly when you have an abundance of dihydrotestosterone hormone (DTH) in your body. This hormone causes the hair follicles to shrink and in the process, prevents hair from coming out of the follicles. However, you can differentiate between the 2 conditions by examining whether or not hair is regrowing on your scalp. You are not likely to regrow hairs when they are gone because of thyroid problems. But male pattern baldness is usually not so severe on your locks; you can get some of your lost hair back with the Propecia treatment.
